What Do P0420 and P0430 Mean?

P0420 and P0430 are common check-engine-light codes related to catalytic converter system efficiency. P0420 usually refers to bank 1, while P0430 usually refers to bank 2 on vehicles that monitor both sides of the exhaust system.

What the codes usually mean

These codes do not identify one single failed part. They tell you that the vehicle computer is seeing oxygen sensor readings that may indicate the catalytic converter system is not working as expected.

  • P0420: catalyst system efficiency below threshold, usually bank 1.
  • P0430: catalyst system efficiency below threshold, usually bank 2.
  • Possible causes include converter wear, exhaust leaks, aging oxygen sensors, fuel mixture issues, or sensor signal problems.
